How To Change Your Life In 5 Seconds

Eric Worre speaks with special guest, Mel Robbins, about her life-changing concept: the 5 Second Rule.

Mel explains that her concept is so simple and obvious, it is almost stupid, but that doesn’t detract from the incredible power of it. She came up with it back in 2009 when she and her husband had hit rock bottom. She was struggling to get up in the morning and take action, until she saw a commercial with a rocket launching. She decided that she was going to start launching herself up in the morning by counting backwards from 5 like NASA. So, the next morning, she counted back from 5 – 5, 4, 3, 2, 1—and got up.

The 5 Second Rule bridges the gap between knowing what you should do and getting off of your butt and doing it. Here’s how you use it: the moment you have the instinct to act on a goal, one of those should moments, count 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and move. The problem most people have is that they stop to think, and they find too many excuses not to do it, so they don’t. So many people let doubt, fear, hesitation, and low confidence stop them from doing what they know they should do. And those thoughts become a habit. What the 5 Second Rule does is interrupt those habits.

This concept is not a tool for thinking. It’s a tool for action. It teaches you to catch yourself the moment you start overthinking, and it interrupts the pattern of self-doubt. By counting backwards from 5, you interrupt the default part of your brain that runs on autopilot and you awaken your pre-frontal cortex which assists you with new and scary tasks.

You can use the 5 Second Rule to push yourself, act out of character, turn fear into excitement, and even do the things you hate. Overtime, you will find that it not only interrupts negative behaviors but triggers positive behaviors. You will find that actions such as recruiting become easier, but more than that, you will develop confidence. Confidence is not a personality trait. It is a skill that you build through action. You prove to yourself through action that you can rely on yourself to make it happen. As long as you are willing to count 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and try, then you are either going to succeed or survive.
