It was a
quiet evening, the kind where the fire crackled softly and the stars began to
peek through the velvet sky. An old Cherokee man sat beside his young grandson
on a worn wooden bench, the kind that had seen many seasons and stories. The
boy, curious and full of wonder, leaned in as his grandfather began to speak in
a low, steady voice—like the rhythm of a drumbeat echoing through time.
“My son,”
he began, “there is a battle that goes on inside every one of us.”
The boy’s
eyes widened.
“A
battle?” he asked.
“Yes,”
the grandfather nodded, the flames from the fire dancing in his wise, weathered
eyes. “It is a fight between two wolves. One is evil—it lives off anger, envy,
greed, arrogance, guilt, and lies. It thrives on resentment, ego, and pride
that blinds us.”
The boy
grew still, picturing the snarling, shadowy wolf in his mind.
“And the
other?” he asked softly.
The
grandfather smiled gently. “The other is good. It is joy, love, peace,
kindness, hope, humility, empathy, and truth. It grows stronger with
compassion, generosity, and faith.”
The boy
sat with the weight of these words, his young mind trying to understand the
complexity of what lived within him—and everyone else.
He
finally looked up at his grandfather and asked, “Which wolf wins?”
The old
man paused, then leaned closer and said simply, “The one you feed.”
The boy
fell quiet again, staring into the fire. And then, in that flickering glow, he
understood. Every time he chose kindness over anger, truth over lies, patience
over frustration—he was feeding the good wolf.
So the
next time you're met with conflict or pain, pause—and ask yourself: Which
wolf will I feed today?
