The lecture hall was packed. Students,
professors, and curious minds leaned forward in their seats, hanging on every
word of the renowned scholar who stood at the podium. His talk had been nothing
short of brilliant—filled with wit, wisdom, and the kind of insight that
lingered long after the applause.
A hush fell over the crowd as small pieces of
paper were passed forward—each containing questions, thoughts, or curiosities
scribbled by attendees.
Among them, however, was one slip that carried
no question at all—just a single word.
“Idiot.”
But what happened next was not what anyone
expected.
The scholar unfolded the paper, glanced at it
briefly, and with complete composure and a twinkle in his eye, addressed the
audience:
“Ladies
and gentlemen,” he said, holding up the slip, “throughout my career, I’ve received many anonymous
questions—some thoughtful, some challenging. But today is a first. Someone has
sent me a note with just their name on it… and forgotten to include the
question.”
And the one who sent it?
He sat frozen in his seat, his cheeks burning,
realizing too late that it takes far more to outsmart someone grounded in
wisdom—and kindness.
Reflection:
There will always be people who try to shake
us—who throw words like stones and hope they cause a crack.
