Stop Blaming God for Your Delays: A Simple Story About Responsibility
A short, inspiring story about honesty, responsibility, and how we often hide behind excuses.
The Birthday Wish
Birthdays at the monastery were usually quiet — no decorations, no parties. Just gratitude, reflection, and simple meals shared together.
So when the Master casually mentioned that he would like a new shirt for his birthday, the disciples were thrilled. Finally, they could do something meaningful for him.
They bought the finest cloth they could find and called the village tailor to take measurements.
The tailor smiled confidently and said:
“In one week, by the will of God, the shirt will be ready.”
The Delays Begin
A week later, the Master gently asked one of the disciples to check on the shirt.
The tailor sighed and said:
“There has been a small delay. But, by the will of God, it will be ready tomorrow.”
Tomorrow came — but the shirt didn’t.
Again the tailor said:
“Come back tomorrow. If God wills, it will certainly be done.”
This went on for days.
The disciples grew frustrated. The Master, however, simply observed — calm and curious.
The Master’s Question
Finally, the Master said:
“Go back once more. But this time, ask him how long it will take if he keeps God out of it.”
When the disciple delivered the message, the tailor fell silent.
No excuses. No spiritual phrases. Just the uncomfortable truth.
The Real Lesson
Sometimes we hide our lack of effort behind beautiful words.
- We blame fate.
- We blame time.
- We blame circumstances — and sometimes even God.
But often, the real problem is simple:
We didn’t prioritize it.
A Modern Reflection
Today it sounds like:
- “I got busy.”
- “Traffic was bad.”
- “Something urgent came up.”
Sometimes it’s true — but many times, it’s just an excuse.
Honesty isn’t only about telling the truth. It’s about owning our actions and taking responsibility for our choices.
Final Thought
When we stop blaming others or destiny, we gain something powerful:
Clarity. Control. Growth.
And that is a far greater gift than any birthday shirt.
