Once upon a time, in a calm blue lake surrounded by whispering reeds, lived a little fish. To her, water was the beginning and end of everything — it was her sky, her ground, her world. She had never imagined anything beyond it, for how could there be something beyond what she knew so well?
One day, as the fish glided gracefully through the sunlit ripples, she saw an old friend — a wise, slow-moving turtle — returning after a long absence.
“Good day, Mr. Turtle!” said the fish cheerfully. “Where have you been? I haven’t seen you in ages!”
The turtle smiled kindly. “Ah, I’ve just been wandering on dry land,” he said.
“Dry land?” the fish blinked in confusion. “What’s that supposed to mean? There’s no such thing. Everything is water!”
The turtle chuckled. “Oh, but there is land — a place where the water ends. I’ve just come from there.”
The fish was intrigued yet skeptical. “Tell me more about this... land. Is it cool and refreshing like our water?”
“No,” said the turtle, shaking his head. “It’s warm and firm beneath your feet.”
“Can you swim through it?” asked the fish.
“Not at all,” replied the turtle. “You walk on it.”
The fish frowned, growing impatient. “So it’s not cool, not clear, you can’t swim in it, and it doesn’t move? How can that be? If it’s none of these things, then it’s nothing!”
The turtle smiled gently. “Just because you have never known it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, my friend. There’s a whole world beyond what you can see — a world you cannot even imagine until you step outside your water.”
But the fish only swished her tail and laughed. “A world beyond water? Ridiculous! Water is everything. You must be dreaming.”
The turtle didn’t argue. With a wise smile, he turned and swam toward the shore, where he climbed out once more onto the “nothing” that the fish could not believe in.
As the fish watched him disappear, a tiny bubble rose beside her. It glimmered in the sunlight before bursting — silent, fleeting, and gone. She gazed at it thoughtfully for a moment, then turned away, content in her small world of water.
Little did she know — beyond that blue surface lay a vast, beautiful world she would never see.
🌱 Moral of the Story
Just because we haven’t experienced something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. The world is far bigger than our own understanding — and sometimes, wisdom begins when we open our minds beyond what we know.
