an apple a day keeps the doctor away

 to catch the sun
If you catch the sun then you have been in the sun long enough to go a little bit red - to get a little bit of sunburn.
I catch the sun very easily - sometimes 20 minutes in the sun can be enough for me to catch it.
The easiest way to stop yourself catching the sun is to wear sun cream (or to stay indoors!).
However, I caught the sun today despite using lots of sun cream. This was probably because I was on top of a mountain (at 1700m above sea level), and there was lots of snow around which intensified the power of the sun.

the coast is clear
The coast is the place where the land meets the sea. There could be a beach or a cliff there, but the general term is coast. New York is on the east coast of the USA, Brighton
is on the south coast of England.
A few hundred years ago smuggling (that's the importing of goods without paying taxes) was relatively common in Cornwall, England. This was because it's quite close to France and there are lots of small bays and caves along the coast where boats could land and goods could
be hidden. Naturally the Customs & Excise (the people who collect the taxes on imported goods) didn't like this and tried to catch the smugglers.
Whenever a boat crossed the channel they would wait for the signal that the coast was clear (that there were no Customs & Excise workers nearby) before landing. So, if the coast is clear it means that it's now safe to do something without anybody catching you.
If you rented a flat where pets were not allowed but you wanted to have your cat in the flat, you would wait until the coast was clear (that the owner of the property or the caretaker wasn't around) before taking the cat into the flat.

don't look a gift horse in the mouth
When buying a horse it's common to look in the horse's mouth, to look at the horse's teeth, to
see if the horse is healthy or not - bad teeth could be a sign of a bad horse.
However, if someone gives you a horse then you shouldn't look in the horse's mouth first to see the condition of the horse's teeth. It's a gift, therefore you accept it whatever condition it is in.
Use - If someone gives you something then you shouldn't complain (at least, not to their face) about the gift. You should accept it happily - that's the polite way to do things.
