How to Cheat and Stay Healthy - Being Bad Is Good For You


Everyone wants to be healthy, but most people want to indulge too. It's cool - you're human. Go for it. Indulge. Cheat. Eat a lot of food. Pig out on a tub of ice cream. Drink a bottle of wine. Do it. It's fun. (Isn't peer pressure awesome?)

You don't need to be perfect to be healthy - you just need to be good. And being good is actually pretty easy and a lot of fun too.

Now, if your goal is to lose thirty pounds, or you want to pack on muscle, or you're training for a marathon, then the rest of this article does not apply to you. In these situations, you pretty much have to be as perfect as possible. I know it stinks, but you're the one who wants to look like a professional body builder. Not me. The same is true for people who are sick, obese, and diseased - in those circumstances you need to be perfect too - especially when faced with illness.

But if you're already relatively healthy and you're not looking to become the next runway queen, I have good news for you. You can cheat often and everything is going to be just fine.

In fact, you're probably going to be a lot happier knowing you can indulge on pizza, rather than killing yourself over a cookie you ate. However, cheating does not mean eating fast food.

When you cheat, it still has to be good stuff. Yes, you can indulge on pizza, but instead of ordering a pie from a huge chain restaurant that uses frozen dough, get your pizza from a local "mom and pop" type place that's been in your neighborhood for years that uses fresh ingredients and whole wheat dough. 

A better idea would be to make your own pizza - using all organic ingredients.  If you want a cheeseburger, go for it. But the meat should be organic and should be from cows that eat grass, with organic cheese made from raw milk. If you want to eat ice cream, it should be organic too. Get it? When you indulge, it should be on good versions of bad food. If you're not trying to be Mr. Perfection, you can eat like this often and you're going to be just fine.

This same argument could be said for alcohol, too. Indulge - have a good time. Drink wine if it's available. If not, then a micro-brew would be the next best choice. It's really common sense. Instead of grabbing a nasty commercially made beer, pick a local brewery that cares about the taste of their ale. Drink up, but be smart and do it in small doses. It's all about moderation when you cheat. You can't do it all the time - just now and again (even a few times a week.)

If want some ice cream, go for it, but not every day. If you want to eat an entire large pizza, do it, but not all the time. If you want to drink a beer, have fun, but drink a micro brew and only have three maybe once a week.  Moderation is vital when cheating. Moderation and smart choices.

Professional athletes also buy into the idea of having a cheat day. It turns out that it's actually good for you. It shocks the body. Exercise Science guru Shannon Clark agrees. Shannon says, "Physiologically, cheats can offer many benefits. If you have been dieting pretty hardcore, it's likely that you have low muscle glycogen levels. Along with this often comes a sluggish feeling during your workouts and less than optimal strength. A cheat meal or day will serve to replenish some of these stores, which will help give you more energy and train harder at your next workouts."

Speaking of workouts, if you plan to cheat more than once a week, you have to work out. Again, your goal is not to lose weight or become Arnold. You just want to be healthy, maintain your weight, and not get sick. If this is you, and you want to cheat, then you must exercise. If you don't, then all of this cheating (even on good food) will more than likely catch up to you eventually. If you want to cheat, you have to sweat - at least 4-5 days a week. This is the small price you pay for wanting to indulge. But it's really not much of a price at all - exercise is the best thing you can do to maintain your health. It's just something you have to do. Learn to live with it and learn to love it.

Cheating is fun. Being perfect is lame. Nobody can be perfect.  It's impossible. You can try all you want. If striving for perfection is what turns you on, go for it, more power to you. But if you're like most human beings, you want chocolate. You can have it too. Just make sure it's dark and organic. So go ahead. Indulge. Be crazy. But be smart about it.

Eat fruits and vegetables, consume a healthy breakfast, make super food smoothies, exercise, take Vitamin D3, never have diet soda, stay away from high fructose corn syrup, cleanse and detox, refuse pharmaceuticals, and pass the fast food joints on your way home from work. If you make those types of healthy decisions, than you can cheat and indulge and pig out often. You won't win a body building competition, but you'll be healthy. Isn't that what really matters?
