The doctor smiled politely, nodded empathetically, and offered his best off-the-clock advice, all while wishing he could just enjoy a bite of the bruschetta before it wilted.
Noticing his growing exhaustion, a sharp-suited man beside him chuckled. It was an old acquaintance — a lawyer known for his quick wit and sharp tongue.
“Rough night?” the lawyer grinned, sipping his wine.
“You have no idea,” the doctor sighed. “Every party turns into a free clinic. I don’t even remember what the hors d'oeuvres tasted like.”
The lawyer smirked knowingly. “Oh, I’ve been there. People do the same to me — legal questions left and right. You know what I do?”
The doctor leaned in, curious. “What’s your trick?”
“I give them the advice,” the lawyer said, pausing dramatically, “and the next day, I send them a bill.”
The doctor burst into laughter, half in disbelief and half in admiration. “You’re joking!”
The lawyer winked. “Try it. Works every time.”
The doctor went home that night thinking, Why not?
The next morning, with a mischievous smile, he sat at his desk, crafting a few mock invoices — just for fun — listing “consultations” given between bites of canapé. Before he could finish, the postman slid a crisp envelope through his letterbox.
Curious, the doctor opened it.
Inside was a neatly typed invoice.
From the lawyer.
Charging him for last night’s legal advice.
Moral of the Story:
Even professionals need boundaries — and sometimes, a good sense of humor to go with them. Advice might be free, but expertise comes with a price… especially if you’re friends with a lawyer!
