Once upon a time, in a far-off land where letters still traveled by royal messengers and kingdoms were measured by the clarity of their diplomacy, two kings—powerful, proud, and wildly misunderstood—almost tore their nations apart… all because of a few vague words.
King Haran ruled a prosperous land known for its wealth and culture. One
evening, sitting in his grand hall filled with advisors and courtiers, he
decided to reach out to a neighboring ruler, King Daman. With a fondness for
rare jewels, King Haran penned a note that seemed simple enough:
“Send me a blue diamond as large as a pigeon’s egg, or else…”
No explanation. No context. Just… “or else.”
King Daman read the message the next day and raised an eyebrow. He
wasn't sure what to make of it—was it a threat, a challenge, or just a strange
request? After some debate, he scribbled a reply:
“We don’t have such a diamond—and if we had…”
And sent it off.
What followed was chaos.
King Haran, upon reading that vague and seemingly dismissive reply, saw
red.
“He dares mock me?” he roared. “Then let him face the consequences!”
He ordered his army to prepare for battle. Soon, the borders of both
kingdoms saw smoke rising, swords clashing, and soldiers fighting—all over an
unfinished sentence.
Months passed, lives were lost, and the people suffered. Until finally,
a wise third king—ruler of a neutral kingdom—stepped in to mediate peace.
He invited both monarchs to his palace and insisted they speak plainly,
face-to-face.
At the meeting, King Haran glared across the table.
“What did you mean by that message? ‘We don’t have such a diamond, and if we
had—’ what?”
King Daman sighed and replied, with a tone of confusion and regret:
“I meant... if we had such a diamond, we would have gladly sent it to you. I
simply don’t own one that large.”
King Haran blinked.
“Oh. Well. That’s not how it sounded.”
King Daman raised an eyebrow.
“And what exactly did you mean by, ‘Send me a diamond or else...’?”
King Haran paused.
“Or else... you could send a different diamond! I just collect rare gems,
that’s all.”
There was a moment of silence. And then… both kings burst out laughing.
They shook hands, apologized, and pledged to never again send half-baked
messages with cliffhanger threats.
Reflection:
Words are powerful—but without clarity, they can be dangerous. What was
meant as a gift request turned into a full-blown war, simply because no one
finished their sentence.
In life, in relationships, and in work, say what you mean.
Spell it out. Ask for clarity. Avoid assuming.
Because sometimes, a little more communication is all it takes to avoid a very unnecessary war.
